The Granny Market Bag

Why This Bag is a Favorite

This bag is one of my favourite makes and designs ever! I love these old school designs that are stylish as ever.

I especially like the round bottom I’ve designed, playing around with different cluster stitches. Later, that same bottom was my inspiration to design the Ode to Granny mandala!

Granny clusters

It probably won’t come as a surprise I used solely Granny clusters, or groups of three double crochet stitches, for the body of the bag. I love it that this stitch pattern remains so popular and got even trendier the past few years. It feels like a true homage to those ladies way back when, who first used this stitch pattern. If only they knew! Did you know that the first published record of the Granny square wasn’t a written pattern, but only a small, detailed engraving? It was published by the Butterick Publishing Co. in 1891.

Whereas back in 1800 crochet was a survival skill for us human beings, nowadays it’s all about helping our planet survive.

We can for instance truly make a difference by not using plastic bags anymore, but by bringing our own, handmade, sustainable bags to the super market. And by giving them away, gifting them! When one sheep is over the dam..

I love using cotton for my bags as it doesn’t stretch and is 100% biodegradable. Linen is a good alternative as it’s even more sustainable.

I used Scheepjes Cahlista. Cahlista means exceptionally pretty and that’s what this yarn is. It’s available in 109 different colours!
