The Belgian Waffles Bag

The waffle stitch

The waffle stitch that I used for the design of this bag is a beautifully textured crochet stitch pattern. The deep square dips give it the texture of Belgian Waffles! It might look complicated but it’s not. In the end it’s just a simple two row repeat with a maximum result.

After making and designing a few market bags (and more will follow) I wanted to design an easy carryall. So no holes that make it impossible to put smaller things like pens and lip balm in the bag.

I designed a crochet bag that’s sustainable and at the same time a real eye-catcher. The bag is perfect for school, work and of course for on holidays. It has an adjustable over the shoulder strap which makes it perfect as an everyday essential.

Yarn selection: Hoooked Eco Barbante

I’d recommend to make the bag with Hoooked Eco Barbante. I love this yarn because it’s 100% recycled and it’s produced in a sustainable way. It’s of high quality, very sturdy but soft and it doesn’t stretch. Although I love my naturals I also adore their colours. I designed a handbag, The Sun and Moon bag, using this yarn. Together they make a great couple!

Alternatively you can use any aran cotton yarn. I hope you love the autumnal colours I picked for my version.

Adjustable handle

Through the years I collected a lot of wooden rings. Old wooden curtain rings mostly. I bought them online and found a few in local thrift shops. I loved using them for my macrame pieces, but since I now mostly crochet they needed a new purpose! During a sleepless night I had an Eureka moment how to use them for the strap of this bag. It gives the bag such an upgrade I think. And of course it’s super practical to be able to adjust the handle. I f you don’t have any wooden rings available you can of course just make a longer handle and attach it to the other side. (Or you order a few cheap ones on Ali and wait 2 months ;-))

Well, I hope you’re going to love crocheting this bag and using it every day of course.
