Aleppo Soap and my Favourite Crocheted Washcloth
The Allure of Crafting Cloths
Cloths in all forms, be it washcloths, dishcloths, or cleaning cloths, hold a special place in people’s hearts and homes. Their quick and easy production makes them an enjoyable creation, providing the ideal opportunity to learn new stitches and play with colours. The resultant cloths are not just beautiful and sustainable but highly functional, making them an exquisite addition to any household.
Choosing the Right Stitch and Material
For my own creation, I selected a stitch with sufficient texture to enhance the cloth’s cleaning capabilities for both the face and body. Cotton is my go-to material for cloths as it expertly absorbs fluids, avoids excessive water retention, and is biodegradable, promoting further sustainability. The added bonus of cotton’s biodegradability aligns with the global shift towards environmental consciousness.
The Ideal Companion: Aleppo Soap
Aleppo soap stands out as the perfect companion to your handcrafted washcloth, especially if considering gifting it. My personal encounter with this exceptional soap occurred during a vacation on the idyllic island of La Palma. The soap, with its unique composition of olive oil, laurel oil, and a tincture of lye, offers a vegan and natural solution for personal hygiene.
Aleppo, a region marred by conflict, holds a rich historical tradition in soap making. The Aleppo soap, believed by many historians to be the world’s first modern soap bar, is renowned for its medicinal properties owing to the inclusion of laurel oil. This essential oil is packed with anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive skin, babies, and those battling skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Purchasing Aleppo soap goes beyond personal benefit. It plays a crucial role in supporting Syrian soap makers striving to rebuild their lives post-conflict and revive the age-old traditions of soap making in the region.
